Motorsport Racing Photographer Interview

Name: DAVE ROOK
Age: 42
Birthday: JULY 3RD

Favorite Car: FERRARI 250 GT SWB
Favorite Sports: CLASSIC MOTORSPORT
Favorite Racedrivers: CURRENT – STEVEN KANE, GUY SMITH AND THE OTHER MODERN DAY BENTLEY BOYS

How did you get into Motorsport/Racing? I’VE HAD AN OBSESSION WITH CARS FROM AN EARLY AGE. I STUDIED CAR DESIGN AT COVENTRY UNIVERSITY AND HAVE WORKED IN THE CAR INDUSTRY EVER SINCE. I HAVE BEEN WORKING AT BENTLEY MOTORS FOR THE PAST 17 YEARS IN INTERIOR R&D. CARS ARE MY DAY TO DAY LIFE. I’VE ALWAYS FOLLOWED F1, BUT I FIND SPORTSCAR RACING (AND ESPECIALLY TO CLASSIC CARS) MOST EXCITING AND MOST INTERESTING FROM A VISUAL PERSPECTIVE. FOLLOWING BENTLEY THROUGH THEIR SUCCESS AT LE MANS IN 2001 – 2003, PLUS THEIR CURRENT SUCCESS IN GT3 IS GREAT TOO.

Why do you do Motorsport/Racing photos?
I GOT INTO PHOTOGRAPHY AS A KID WITH AN OLD FILM SLR. I STARTED MY LATEST PASSION WITH MOTORSPORT PHOTOGRAPHY IN 2009 SHOOTING WITH A FRIEND, AT EVENTS LIKE THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC AND GOODWOOD REVIVAL. THAT’S WHEN I STARTED DEVELOPING MY LOVE FOR 50’S AND 60’S SPORTSCARS. OLD FERRARIS, JAGUARS, ASTON MARTINS, MASERATIS AND PORSCHES – THEY’RE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TO ME. THAT BEAUTY TIED MY INTERESTS IN CARS, DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY AND RACING TOGETHER.

What type of camera do you use most?
I’VE USED NIKON DSLRS SINCE 2009. I CURRENTLY USE A NIKON D7100.

What is your favorite lens? I’VE ALWAYS HAD GOOD RESULTS FROM MY NIKON 35MM F1.8 PRIME LENS, ALTHOUGH I AM NOW FAVOURING A SIGMA F1.8 18-35MM ZOOM FOR IT’S SIMILAR PERFORMANCE WITH INCREASED FLEXIBILITY IN CLOSE QUARTERS

What is the car you have had the most fun while driving? Race or street car? OUR CURRENT PORSCHE 981 CAYMAN IS THE MOST FUN CAR THAT WE’VE OWNED. I’VE HAD LITTLE TRACK EXPERIENCE, BUT LOVED SPENDING TIME IN A CATERHAM TRACKSPORT AROUND DONINGTON PARK CIRCUIT LAST YEAR. NOT A HUGE AMOUNT OF POWER BUT LOADS OF FUN AND FEEDBACK.

At what point did you know Motorsport/Racing photography was going to be more than just a hobby for you?
IT IS JUST A HOBBY FOR ME. OKAY, MAYBE IT’S MORE OF AN OBSESSION. BUT IT’S WHAT I LOVE TO DO TO BOTH RELAX AND BE CREATIVE OUTSIDE OF MY WORK AT BENTLEY.

Who is your favorite childhood race car driver? Maybe someone who inspired you to want to be a driver too.
WHEN I WAS GROWING UP IT WAS ALL ABOUT NIGEL MANSELL AND THEN DAMON HILL IN F1.

What for you is the most enjoyable part of motorsport photography? NOW THAT I’VE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHING MOTORSPORT FOR A WHILE, ONE THE MOST ENJOYABLE PARTS ARE SEEING A ‘NEW’ OLD CAR THAT I’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. THIS REGULARLY HAPPENS WITH CLASSIC RACING AS CARS GET RESTORED AND PREPARED FOR RACING. I ALSO REALLY ENJOY MOMENTS SPENT TALKING WITH OWNERS AND DRIVERS. IT’S A GREAT FEELING WHEN OWNERS GET IN CONTACT IF THEY’VE SEEN AND LOVED A PICTURE THAT YOU’VE TAKEN OF THEIR CAR. A FEW YEARS AGO I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET IN CONTACT WITH A LOVELY GENTLEMAN WHO OWNS SOME FANTASTIC OLD FERRARIS AND A LE MANS JAGUAR D TYPE. I’VE PHOTOGRAPHED AND RIDDEN OUT IN HIS CARS AND WE’RE STILL IN CONTACT. OKAY, MAYBER THAT THE MOST ENJOYABLE PART*

Could you give some Racing tips? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I HAVE LITTLE NATURAL TALENT!

What do you think you would want to be if you weren’t a Motorsport/Racing Photographer?
ACTUALLY, I’VE OFTEN THOUGHT THAT IT MIGHT LIKE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL MIXING YOUR PASSIONS WITH YOUR PROFESSION. I’D ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A CAR DESIGNER WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, AND WHAT I DO NOW AT BENTLEY COMES CLOSE.

Which is more important in racing – a strong upper body, lower body, or core? NO IDEA, SORRY!

Who are the sportsmen or sportswoman’s you admire the most?
OTHER THAN MOTORSPORT I DON’T FOLLOW MUCH SPORT, AND I THINK I LOVE MOTORSPORT MOST FOR THE CARS AND THE CHALLENGE OF PHOTOGRAPHING THEM. I THINK I HAVE SOME REAL ADMIRATION FOR THE LIKES OF FANGIO, MOSS AND THE LIKE WHO RACED IN THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES. THEY SEEMED TO TAKE ON HUGE RISKS AND RACE AT AND BEYOND THE LIMITS OF THEIR CARS IN SUCH SPECTACULAR FASHION. I THINK THAT THERE WAS A ROMANCE OT THAT ERA OF MOTOR RACING, ALTHOUGH IM’ NOT OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW FOR SURE.

What do you want your viewers to take away from your work? TO TAKE SOME ENJOYMENT OUT IT. TO SHARE CARS, EVENTS AND OCCASIONS THAT I’VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE PART OF. AND ALSO TO RECOGNISE THE PASSION THAT I PUT INTO WHAT I DO, I GUESS.
