Who is Richard Schulman?
Richard Schulman is a photographer who makes photographs for the experiences of creating and engaging a larger world
I am a photographer who photographs everything but became an architectural photographer for the beauty of silence, the sound and passion for design
I have been a photographer. For more than 35 years…

For how long have been in photography? How did you start?
I started my career as a photographer to use a camera as a tool to eXperience a life.

How would you define yourself as an artist?
I cannot define myself…I am always trying to figure out how much more I can be.

Where do you find inspiration? Were you influenced by other architecture photographers?
I find inspiration from cinema…
I was never influenced by other Architectural Photographers…I was influenced by Architecture’s Design

What special skills and equipment would you consider essential when photographing architecture?
Special skills to photograph Architecture? A marriage between your mind’s eye and the execution of the camera…and equipment?…a medium or large format camera with film
What stands behind creating fine art and architectural photography?

The only thing that stands behind fine art and architectural photography…is the recognition that one can’t be like another and when you make an image
You are presenting something that you created today to show to someone tomorrow (in the future) about the past
What type of camera do you use most? Camera? Pentax 6×7…and 45mm lens

What has been your most memorable assignment and why? I have had hundreds of memorable moments…but visiting Oscar Niemeyer in Rio….spending the afternoon with him…and spending days shooting his Architecture…epitomized the reason I became a photographer: to experience a life with others who have impacted our cultural world….and to say I have participated in the process
What are your favourite three images you have shot recently? 3 images? I have recently shot that are my favorites?
Calatrava’s Oculus in Manhattan…David Adjaye’s Museum for African American… In Washington DC…and a portrait of Karim Rashid

What’s the most important quality a photographer needs to have? “take no prisoners” put it all out there every time you shoot

Who are the photographer’s you admire the most? Photographers I admire?…Josef Koudelka, Bill Brandt, Man Ray

What about architects and designers?
…I have so many loves…and friends…impossible to mention
Artists I admire?…objectively, hundreds have made me cry with envy

What are your next projects? Up coming work? … a book about New York, a book about Design and and and

Share something you would like the world to know about you. About me? I am in this life as a photographer…for the long haul
Every moment every picture matters…because it reflects how I live and see the world
