THESE ARE THE ARTISTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

They are young, inspiring and challenging. They are surprising and convincing. And they are unmistakable. For all that, the 100 young artist personalities do have something in common: their work is already firing great hopes that they’ll occupy commanding positions in the art scene. Be it admitted from the start: this is of course a subjective choice. But the question has to be: can any small selection from the diverse young art world be objective? Of course not! So the editorial board of this project quite deliberately embraced the difficulty in making its choices. And a good job too, because the contestable process resulted in an unusual book.

Editor Olaf Salié and the selection board are all intimately familiar with the vast spectrum of contemporary art. The team consists of Alexandra Wendorf, editor-in-chief of Junge Kunst; gallery owners Dr. Rupert Pfab and Thomas Rehbein; collector Dr. Thomas Rusche; businessman and co-founder of Kirschpflu?cker e.V. Fritz Conzen; artist, designer and curator Mike Meire?; and Ge?rard Goodrow, former director of Art Cologne. The last-named is also one of the team of authors, which also includes art historians Rebecca Maria Ja?ger, Thomas W. Kuhn, Sabine Elsa Mu?ller and Julia Ritterskamp. The editorial and organisational coordination was managed by experienced Cologne editor Christiane Blass. All of them contributed their knowledge and judgement skills to the project.

The result is a compendium of personalities and positions, across the spectrum of artistic disciplines – all of which one should literally keep an eye on. All of these young national and international artists have a connection with Germany. Their will to make, their seriousness, and the exciting, relevant work they have created, merit attention and critical commentary. There are very young artists among them, who have not yet graduated from their academies, as well as others who are already achieving success in the art world. The team who worked on this book felt this range was important in order to display the full range, relate different positions to each other, and in the process survey the current art scene as revealingly as possible. This publication is a watchlist, essential for art lovers, collectors, gallery owners and curators. Uninfluenced by hype, it blazes a trail through the lively, fascinating, and virtually impe- netrable world of young artists on the fringe of the established art scene. In alphabetical order, the book presents highly impressive personalities whose work covers a broad spectrum of the visual arts. Whether abstract or figurative, colourful or monochrome, stimulating, impulsive, provocative or wistful, they all open up new perspectives to the beholder. Mike Meire?’s understated design gives the works the space they need to make this entrance into the world of new artists a sheer pleasure.
